HVHTA AGM Hosting Authors as Guest Speakers
April 7, 2014

The Humber Valley Heritage Trail Association
invites you to its Annual General Meeting (Bolton Chapter) this Wednesday April
9th at 7 p.m.  The meeting is at Humberview Secondary School (in the library),
135 Kingsview Drive, Bolton.

The guest speakers are Jim and Sue Waddington, authors of “In the Footsteps
of the Group of Seven”, which describes their search for the sites that inspired
the Group of Seven’s paintings.  Their talk will include photographs – side by
side with the corresponding paintings – of some of the over 300 locations they
found that are immortalized in the famous paintings.  The Waddingtons will also
talk about some of the Group of Seven’s painting sites in Caledon.

Their book will be available for sale ($55 + $2.75 HST). All proceeds of book
sales are going to the Art Gallery of Sudbury.

The Waddingtons’ Facebook page is: www.facebook.com/FootstepsGroup7

Goose Lane Books says this about the Waddingtons' book:

In the Footsteps of the Group of Seven

Sue Waddington (Author)
Jim Waddington (Author)

Nearly a century ago, a group of artists travelled into northern Ontario and farther afield to capture the raw, terrible beauty that lay just beyond the outskirts of Canada’s cities and towns. Armed with sketchbooks, brushes, and paintboxes, they set off into the heart of the wilderness with the singular purpose of interpreting the landscape in a modern mode of artistic expression.

In July 1977, Jim and Sue Waddington set off on their own expedition to discover the places that inspired these artists. Determined to locate, document, and photograph the actual landscapes that inspired A.Y. Jackson, Franklin Carmichael, Arthur Lismer, Lawren Harris, A.J. Casson, J.E.H. MacDonald, Tom Thomson, and Frederick Varley, the Waddingtons began a 36-year journey — tracking down clues, deciphering bits of information, tracing ancient portage routes, and exploring hidden inlets — all with the purpose of finding the very spots that gave birth to the work of the Group of Seven.

In presenting reproductions of the original paintings and contemporary photographs of the locations where the original works were created, the Waddingtons invite us to come face to face with the elusive muses that enlightened and enriched this renowned group of artists.

All proceeds from sales of the book will go to the Art Gallery of Sudbury.

Story told by Bob Smith
Story recorded by Ann Wood and Jean Proctor
Story transcribed by Fay McCrea
Story submitted to CHF by Fay McCrea

This is a story told by the Late Bob Smith, part owner and pharmacist at Leggett and Smith in Bolton, to Ann Wood and Jean Proctor in October 2007 and later transcribed by Fay McCrea.

"A lot of people came over to the pharmacy in Bolton from Caledon East because we had a lot of animal health products as well as the pharmacy.

The veterinarian service was a big part of our business we had a lot of animal health supplies and a lot of the farmers would come in to get supplies.

Mr. Leggett belonged to an Animal Health Association in the United States and he was interested in bringing it to Ontario.   I’d had a little training because I had lived on a farm up in Ripley-Kincardine way and it stood me in good stead but I picked up a lot of information from the farmers.

We used to sell Penicillin, Streptomycin, Tetracycline and those injectable products for the animals because the farmers would pretty well treat their own animals as there weren’t many vets around. Dr. McCabe lived across the street and he was the only one in the area.   I knew the type of medication that an animal would need and the farmers knew how to administer it. That was a good part of our business at that time.

We were still doing a fair bit of that almost up until the time I left the pharmacy (1984)."

Bob Smith passed away in June 2013.
What a great record of the story Bob told about  Leggett and Smith selling veterinarian supplies from the drug store.
